ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION
The San Francisco Tenants Union (SFTU) is a membership- and donation-supported, volunteer-based tenants rights advocacy collective. We help tenants deal with landlord problems; advocate for decent, safe, affordable rental housing; and work for stronger laws protecting tenants with a focus on tenants covered by the San Francisco Rent Ordinance. POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director provides overall leadership, direction, and support to staff, steering, and members in order to achieve its collective vision. In service of the organization and the movement, the Executive Director will ensure stronger relationships with key allies and stakeholders, ongoing fundraising success, increasing political relevance and strength, and continued pride, cooperation, and good working conditions on the part of the staff.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead in developing and implementing SFTU’s grassroots organizing and legislative agenda, including participating in meetings with elected officials and housing rights and other community organizations, researching issues, developing policy, and proposing legislation.
- Communicate with media, the community, and elected officials about the SFTU’s positions on tenant issues.
- Oversee day to day fiscal and administrative operations.
- Support and/or lead grassroots fundraising strategies and ensure that financial goals and objectives are achieved.
- Joint Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
- Work with staff, steering committee, and volunteers on shared responsibilities to achieve organizational mission.
- Support the volunteer counseling clinic through trainings and workshops.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of and commitment to values of social and economic justice, specifically assisting low-income/disadvantaged communities.
- Knowledge and understanding of tenant and housing rights, public policy, and land use planning in San Francisco.
- Knowledge and understanding of how to build grassroots and political power through base-building, civic engagement, and movement building.
- Capable of working well both independently and in a collaborative environment (e.g. experience with consensus and non-hierarchical decision making).
- Good leadership and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Language skills highly preferred (e.g. Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin).
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The position is full-time. Starting salary is $42,000 with healthcare benefits. Hours are flexible but include some evenings and weekends.
