Just Cause Eviction and Rent Control in Other California Cities
The more tenants there are who are rent-controlled of have just cause eviction protection, the stronger we are. In the San Francisco Bay Area the cities of Alameda, Berkeley, Campbell, Concord, East Palo Alto, Emeryville, Fremont, Hayward, Los Gatos, Mountain View, Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco, San Jose, and Union City have rent increase laws. El Cerrito and properties with 3 or more units in the unincorporated areas of Marin County (including Marin City) have just cause for eviction protection.
Here’s the latest news from Tenants Together, California’s statewide tenant rights organization:
El Cerrito: Thanks to the hard work of groups like El Cerrito Progressives (with a supportive boost from Tenants Together’s Northern California organizer Eduardo), the El Cerrito City Council passed the city’s first-ever rental registry and just-cause eviction ordinances Tuesday night.
Alameda: Despite the real estate industry’s attempts to block strong just-cause protections for Alameda renters in 2016 and 2017, the Alameda City Council passed a new just-cause ordinance Tuesday night. We’re very thankful for the tireless advocacy of our friends and member organization, the Alameda Renters Coalition!
Oakland: Oakland’s City Council voted to close loopholes that prohibited rent control from applying to owner-occupied duplexes and triplexes, after a sustained yearlong #CloseTheLoopholes campaign from tenant and community organizers including our members Oakland Tenants Union and Causa Justa::Just Cause.
Long Beach: Despite last-minute attempts by the local real estate lobby to roll it back, Long Beach City Council approved the first reading of a relocation ordinance that will help tenants afford to move out if they are faced with a large rent hike. Congratulations to our friend and member organization Housing Long Beach for fighting to the finish to get the bill passed.
(Long Beach renters celebrate their victory last night)
These victories would not be possible if renters and their allies had not banded together to fight for their rights.
