Statewide Rent Cap and Just Cause Bill Goes Into Effect January 2020: Has Your Landlord Spiked Your Rent or Sent An Eviction Notice In Advance of This Law?
California Legislature passed Assembly Bill 1482 to “cap” how much rent can be increased per year and also requires landlords to provide “cause” for eviction notices for covered units. In San Francisco, it largely impacts units that are not currently covered by our local rent control ordinance, which provides stronger protections. Since provisions for AB 1482 aren’t effective until January 1st, 2020, some tenants have received no-cause eviction notices and rent hikes by landlords of units that will be covered by this new law. If you are one of these people and you live in SF, please contact Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco! If you live elsewhere, contact Tenants Together’s hotline at (888) 495-8020.
Many cities are trying to address this gap in coverage by pushing local jurisdictions to pass emergency legislation that essentially puts AB 1482 protection into effect now, and we are working to do the same for those impacted locally.
