SF Just Cause Eviction for Post-1979 Construction Effective January 19, 2020
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors, now has a progressive majority that can override moderate vetoes from some of the Supervisors and the Mayor, have approved the law requiring units that were formerly exempt from the San Francisco Rent Ordinance due to construction after 1979 to require a just cause for eviction effective January 19, 2020. The San Francisco Rent Ordinance requiring just cause provides more protection than state law providing just cause. However, for these newer buildings, state law limiting rent increases apply when the San Francisco Rent Ordinance does not.
