Job Opening: Director of Operations and Activism
The SFTU prides itself on being a volunteer-driven organization where community members come together to define and advocate for their shared interests as tenants. The Director of Operations and Activism will support the volunteer-led committee system to function effectively, maintain the operations of the organization, and act as a point person for external partners.
Core Responsibilities:
- Organizing and Advocacy: Keep track of legislative, policy, political and organizing activity
- Cultivating the Organization: Help create structures and culture to support volunteer engagement and organization
- Serve as Public Face: Form relationships with lawmakers and partners; speak in public forums and to the press
- Bottomline Fundraising: Build and maintain systems to organize fundraising activities
- Administrative Necessities: Maintain budget, financial management, and internal software systems (Salsa)
Qualifications
We seek a movement organizer, activist, and community member. We recognize that whoever is in this position needs some professional nonprofit (or equivalent) experience to be able to perform the nuts-and-bolts of budget management and fundraising that the position requires.
Essentials:
- Experienced and informed about tenants’ rights
- 1+ years of organizing/movement-building experience
- 1+ years of nonprofit experience
- Fundraising experience
- Strong communication skills (verbal, written and proofreading)
- Superior interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and manage tasks and projects effectively from inception to completion
- Availability for evening and week-end work
Experience we deeply value but do not require:
- Speak more than one language
- Director-level experience
- Detailed knowledge of tenants’ rights and public policy
- Experience engaging with lawmakers
- Campaign compliance/reporting, Independent Expenditure (IE) experience
- Experience building policy and advocating within coalitions
- Internal organizational systems building
- Facilitation and dispute resolution experience
- Experience with social media
- Budget management experience
